The bucket list of wishes, and a handful of days

I realized that I had very little time left at ISB on the night when I got placed. Before that ISB had been a busy roller coaster, where things were sort of running in auto-pilot mode. Everything seemed to happen according to a plan; a plan that was in accordance with the grand cosmic scheme of things. But here I was, 70 odd days from graduation, suddenly realizing that a lot was yet to be done. And time was running out fast.

The first few days went in celebrations, but then since everyone in our group wasn't placed, everything was low key. The initial idea was to go grand when all in our group would be placed. However, we soon realized that this plan wasn't working. So we made the first big plan that did not involve the whole group. This plan was Goa! And the trip was Legen... wait for it... wait for it... dary. I honestly dont remember the last time when I had so much fun. The trip was 6 day long, and when the plans were made there were ample apprehensions on whether there are enough things to do in Goa for 6 days. Believe me, 6 days were not enough! Bagha, Calunghut, Watersports, Arambol, the Dil Chahta Hai fort, Wagator, Anjuna (oh yes Curly's - went there twice in 6 nights), Doodhsagar Falls, Palolem - all in 6 days! Although we managed to cover a lot in Goa, we missed out on old Goa almost entirely! But at hindsight, maybe that was for the good; if we covered everything this time, what would be the motivation for the next visit?

By this time it was already the beginning of Term 8 - all in all 5 weeks left. And since most of us were placed, planing events was no longer a major constraint. So here came the Wishlist! Everybody had something or the other in mind on things that they wanted to do before they left ISB. And now was the time that they put forth their ideas. The next 5 weeks also went on auto-pilot now, only of a different kind this time. But still seemingly in accordance with the grand cosmic scheme of things. The last month at ISB was probably a time when we maxed out a lot of things at ISB - max no. of theatres visited, max no. of dinner outings (this is inspite of having a year long meal plan at Goel... duh!), max visits to Gachibowli Wines, max parties at M's corner, max no. of movies watched on the projector issued by IT - the list is undending. This had one direct result, there were certain people in Hyderabad who started recognizing us by face - the ISB watchmen, the Dot Cab drivers, the waiters in almost all restaurants in Hyderabad (oh yes, ST was even reminded what she ordered the last time when she visited!), the Cinema Hall ticket checkers and the Idli wala at Wipro. Everyday we would crib that there are so many things to do, fight amongst each other on prioritizing the items in the "Wishlist"; and most often end up chatting up all night without actually doing anything. Which implied a simple thing - not all items on the wishlist would be checked eventually.

After graduation, we all went our ways promising each other that we would definitely meet up frequently and relive ISB days in Bombay and Delhi - knowing very well from within that this was probably not going to happen. Here I am, at home, trying to pass time before I join my job; and as I write this vivid memories of all the things we did together are flashing right in front of my eyes. And dear yes, I am missing those moments.

Maybe it was a good thing after all that all the items in the "Wishlist" were not checked. Maybe these would become the motivation for another visit by the entire group to ISB. Maybe these unchecked items would motivate us to meet up somewhere and get done with the unfinished business. Maybe time will tell.

The money minting machine

If you haven't figured it by now, I am referring to the Indian Premier League. However, I must add here that as a true sports fan, I dont care a bit who mints money and who doesn't. And if you thought this post was going to critique the money makers in the game, comment on the ongoing controversies - well, you were grossly mistaken! Well, I do have one small comment - I believe the controversies surrounding IPL has benefitted Twitter the most, and all of a sudden it has become a household name. Other than that, the purpose of this post is fairly simple. Everyone in India feels that he is an expert in cricket, and everyone includes me as well - so here I attempt prove the same by doing the following three things:

   1. Question certain things about the teams that I fail to understand
   2. Come up with the "IPL 2010 Dream Team"
   3. Offer my predictions for the remaining 4 games of the IPL

You might see in the post that I will do more than these three things, but in true consulting style I believe a synthesis which has more than three points is not a proper synthesis and reflects the author's inability to summarize content. (cant help it, have done so many case preps last year some things have got permanently implanted in  my psyche)

Okay, so let me get straight to the point. To the points actually!

Things that I fail to understand
First, I fail to understand SRK's involvement in the KKR team and his tweets. The only thing that SRK should be allowed conrtol over the KKR team should be the colour of the team jersey. Take a lesson from EPL for gods sake! And dude, seriously, hold on to your inspirational tweets and phoenix advertisements on newspapers - you went a little too early this time.
This applies to few other teams as well, but SRK's example being the most vibrant, I choose to quote only one. I guess SRK too is increasingly becoming aware of this fact - he turned up in plain clothes and not in the KKR jersey for the last KKR match against MI at Eden Gardens.

Second, I sincerely fail to understand the team selections of many teams, be it the domestic players or the international recruits. I will list a few top of the mind recall items:
1. What is Ryan McLaren doing in the MI team? Play Dilhara Fernando instead. And Rajagopal Sathish seriously? Abhishek Nayar or Stuart Binny should be playing instead of him.
2. DC, why did you drop Chaminda Vaas? Dont ever try to explain and make a bigger fool out of yourself. And on which planet is Mitchell Marsh better than Gibbs? And Venugopal Rao for B Sumanth, definitely!
3. Why do CSK have to keep playing Hayden when he is in such a poor form? Cant understand leaving Michael Hussey out. If I were Dhoni, I would have played Justin Kemp too.
4. RCB have definitely done better than rest of the teams, but I believe Cameron White should play for out of form Ross Taylor. And Praveen Kumar for Vinay Kumar.
5. Delhi - what have you done? How can you ask AB de Villiers to sit out? Should certainly have played in place of Collingwood. And dudes, dont you think you have picked up a wrong set of players - 4 openers played in your last game!
6. KKR -why drop Hodge, the most consistent batsman of your team in the last 2 IPLs? Sourav, with due respect, shouldn't Gayle and McCullum have opened the innings? Why is Wriddhiman Saha (good for nothing player) playing when McCullum can keep wickets? And guys, did you watch ICL - Rohan Gavaskar seriously deserved a spot in the team!
7. Rajasthan Royals did nothing wrong, they just had a below par team.
8. The most dissapointing was KXI Punjab - I thought they were one of the strongest teams on paper. Again, they dropped their in form player Ravi Bopara - big mistake! Personally, dont see any sense in playing an average cricketer like Juan Theron. Also, Reetinder Sodhi - these guys surely didn't watch ICL. Sodhi would have walked into my Kings XI team purely for his batting! And Yuvraj - you should do something about your paunch - seriously!

Dream Team of IPL 2010
Okay, first I must admit that I am making this team because I get to make Sachin the captain. Yeah I am biased, but who cares and who isn't? Anyways, back to the point again. My IPL XI would include the folloing players, in the same batting order:

   1. Sachin Tendulkar (c)
   2. Jaques Kallis
   3. Suresh Raina
   4. Rohit Sharma
   5. Andrew Symonds
   6. Robin Uthappa (wk)
   7. Murali Vijay
   8. Harbhajan Singh
   9. Dale Steyn
   10. Amit Mishra
   11. Lasith Malinga

   12th Man: Chaminda Vaas
You might note that the playing eleven has only four foreign players, as per the rules of IPL.

My Predictions:
Semi-Final 1: Mumbai Indians vs. Royal Challengers Bangalore (today)
Sachin has played too well so far and the law of averages is going to catch up. I expect a big innings from KP today, and RCB is going to floor MI today.
Semi Final 2: Deccan Chargers vs. Chennai Super Kings (tomorrow)
This match would be the end of the dream run for Deccan Chargers.  CSK would drub Deccan, with Raina and Dhoni playing crucial knocks.
Third Place Playoff: Mumbai Indians vs. Deccan Chargers (Saturday)
The drubbing for DC would continue, with Sachin back among runs again. Plus some Malinga Magic!

The Final: Chennai Super Kings vs. Royal Challengers Bangalore (Sunday)
This, I believe is the time for glory for Anil Kumble. Big knocks from Kallis and Uthappa, plus some magical stuff from Kumble and Steyn.

PS: This is not what I wish would happen. This is merely my prediction. I sincerely wish Mumbai wins the IPL with Sachin scoring plenty of runs.

Charminar

Its ironic that I visited the Charminar for the first (and only) time on the last day of my stint at Hyderabad. I must confess, I had very little expectations from the visit. The general feedback I had recieved from friends about the monument was nothing phenomenal. Somehow, the visit to Charminar never happened during my stay at ISB. And I was almost certain that it wouldn't happen for some time to come. My parents were in Hyderabad for the convocation, and they were actually very keen on visiting Charminar. Unfortunately though, curfew was imposed in the old city due to communal violence. But as fate would have it, curfew was partially lifted, from 8 AM to 5 PM on the day we were slated to leave Hyderabad. And this was my chance for glory. After all, what would your neighbours ask you when you are back from your first trip to Hyderabad? Almost certainly the following two questions:
1. Did you see the Charminar?
2. Did you have Hyderabadi Biryani at Paradise?
Well, till now the answer to both the questions was no as far as my parents were concerned. And hence the chance to glory. I could arrange a quick visit to Charminar and drop by at Paradise before leaving Hyderabad! I did exactly that. And boy, I am delighted I did.

I dont know that what impressed me more, the Charminar or the Old Hyderabad city, but there was something different about the place. For starters, it was different from the rest of Hyderabad. Narrow lanes, heavy chirping and chaotic auto traffic, old buildings - wait, read very old buildings; you know you are at a different place the moment you are there. And the Charminar, despite the fact that we the people have tried hard to ruin its beauty by scribbling on its walls till the height our hands can reach, still stands tall in the middle of the road, unperturbed by the choas all around it. The architechture of the monument is scintillating and grand in ways more than one. The view from the first floor is mesmerizing, especially the view of the auto-rickshaws in a jigsaw puzzle just below. Although I took a pic, the picture wouldn't do justice to what I mean, and hence am not posting the same. Bottomline, if you are in Hyderabad and haven't been to Charminar - go there soon!

Due to paucity of time, I still missed out on three things at Charminar:
1. A visit to the bangle market
2. Arabian Tea
3. Shadab's Dum Biryani

We (read BBG) had planned a visit to Charminar on our bikes and stop-over at Shadab's for biryani. As I said, the plan never materialized. I think this is one thing that we missed out on doing at ISB. Come December 2010, come Solstice, hope to set the record straight. I hope 7/7 would be there. Would definitely miss my Avenger!

Grapevine facts about Charminar:
1. Charminar is a mosque. And right beneath, a temple has been constructed. See the saffron flags in the picture?
2. There is a legend of an underground tunnel that connects the Charminar and the Golconda fort. Search for it!
